Today was a wine tour with Wine Flies. We visited 5 “farms” ranging in size from a couple of acres where they hand press the grapes to a rather large very commercial venture that had some very good cheeses. Unfortunately at the end of the day I left a package of apricot brie in the van at the end of the day. Our group of 11 included a couple from Alaska, a German woman, a couple of Danish women, 3 or 4 Brits and a Belgian. Our driver/guide was a very knowledgeable Italian.
The wines are very inexpensive, ranging in price from about US$5 to under US$20 for the most expensive. At on farm I asked the cost of shipping a case back home and found that the shipping cost would have been about $350. I just couldn’t justify spending R(and) 267 to ship a bottle of R125 wine, granted, even with the shipping it’s not particularly expensive wine. For reference, yesterday at dinner I paid R35 (about US$4) for a glass of one of the more expensive wines on the menu at a nice restaurant.
